When missing returns complicate a refund question

Check filing history before assuming a delayed refund has only one cause.

Updated October 23, 2026 · 2 min read · General educational information

Start with your situation

Create a list of required years with actual submission evidence. If a return is missing, gather its records separately so the refund inquiry does not hide the work still needed for compliance.

Separate filing from paying

An inability to pay does not make an overdue return disappear. IRS guidance encourages filing required returns even when full payment is not available. Missing returns can complicate a resolution review. Use the forms and instructions for the correct year, and check any notice for a specific filing address or required response.

Create a filing inventory

For each year, mark whether a return was required, prepared, submitted, and accepted or processed. Gather wage statements, business records, prior copies, and relevant transcripts. Do not assume a prepared draft was filed. Ask a qualified preparer to review uncertain years and missing information, then preserve evidence of submission alongside the completed return.

  • List missing years
  • Find the correct year forms
  • Keep submission and processing evidence

Questions to consider

Should I wait until I can pay to file?

Generally, no. Filing and payment are separate obligations; review IRS guidance and any instructions specific to your notice.
