Questions before paying for help with a refund issue

Identify the problem and included work before agreeing to a service fee.

Start with your situation

Ask whether the provider will review an adjustment, trace a payment, address an offset, or prepare a return. A defined task is easier to compare than a broad promise to get money released.

Compare defined work, not a headline price

A quoted fee is easier to assess when the provider explains the investigation, filings, agency contacts, and follow-up included. Tax resolution and return preparation may be billed separately. Professional assistance is optional for many IRS self-service processes. Compare the value of paid help with the complexity of the records, deadlines, and issues in your case.

Ask for a scope-based proposal

Request a written explanation of the initial work, later stages, additional charges, cancellation terms, and responsibility for current returns. Ask who performs each stage and whether the price changes if the preferred option is unavailable. Separate a provider's fee from payments owed to the agency. Do not judge the proposal by a promised tax reduction alone.

  • Request itemized scope and exclusions
  • Separate agency payments from service fees
  • Read cancellation and extra-work terms

Questions to consider

Must I hire a company to request a payment plan?

Not necessarily. The IRS offers direct application options; paid help may be useful when issues or records are more complex.
